NEHAWU Northern Cape Concludes A Wage Agreement With Sol Plaatje University

Friday March 11, 2022

The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union [NEHAWU] in the Northern Cape has concluded a wage agreement with the Sol Plaatje University for the year 2022. This comes after lengthy negotiations with the management collective and negotiating team of the University.

On Salary Increment

Both Parties agreed on the following in terms of salary increases in-line with the total cost to company which shall be paid with the March 2022 payrun and back dated to January 31st 2022:

  • Term of agreement – a single term agreement
  • Cost of Living Adjustment – a 6% across the board increment for all workers from Peromnes Level 5 to 18

The union welcomes this as a step in the right direction given the hardships that COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted on workers and the working class. More importantly parties agreed to develop a framework to deal with the increasing wage gap by setting up a team to work towards standardizing sliding scale wage agreements.

Outstanding Issues
Parties further agreed that the following items will be deferred for further engagements between parties;

  • Medical aid Scheme and provider
  • Pension contributions and retirement fund management
  • Outstanding Policies (Bursary, Bereavement etc.)
  • Internalization of disciplinary processes
  • Staff shortages (cleaners, security etc.)
  • COVID-19 Risk Allowances for Securities

The university has agreed that a progress report on these issues must be concluded by the end of June 2022 in order to report back to members and consolidate our demands for the next round of negotiations.

While we welcome these developments, we remain concerned with the position of the university on mandatory vaccination against COVID-19. In particular, the harassment against our members and workers in general who have chosen not to vaccinate against COVID-19. While we advocate for more people to be vaccinated, we remain opposed to mandatory vaccination and call on the university to desist from such actions.
